This extension, completed between April 2016 and late 2017, was pivotal in enhancing public transport connectivity, offering a seamless link between Gold Coast and Brisbane. Stage 2 introduced 7.3 km of dual track, three new light rail stations (Parkwood East, Parkwood, and Helensvale), and significant park and ride facilities with 1,000 spaces at Parkwood and 400 spaces at Helensvale.

The project played a crucial role during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, accommodating the transportation needs of approximately 6,500 athletes, 16,000 workers and volunteers, and 1.5 million spectators. With the capability to transport up to 3,000 people per hour, the light rail system efficiently connected attendees to major event locations in Southport, Surfers Paradise, and Broadbeach, showcasing its importance in meeting increasing public transport demands.
